What to do Before an Emergency

What to do During an Emergency

When Binyamin Golden was asked what is the best advice for the Jewish people in these troubled times his answer was clear and precise.

More recently, the "Gedolim" — the leaders of the Israeli Orthodox community came out with a similar announcement. Profuse prayer and Tehillim — the recitation of the Psalms of King David are the most powerful tools we have. We created a chart to simplify things. Jump in where you're comfortable.

Before an Emergency:

Pray: However you do it, reconnect to God with a renewed interest and desire.
  • The best:
  • Men: Pray (daven) in Hebrew with a group of 10 men, for Shacharit, Mincha, & Maariv (the morning, afternoon and evening prayers). Women: Daven in Hebrew as often as you can.
  • Next best:
  • Pray in any language in a group of 10 as often as you can.
  • Next best:
  • Pray in any language wherever you are, whenever you can.
  • Next best:
  • Keep a constant inner dialogue with God. He hears it all, for in making your mind He knows what's on your mind.

    Say Tehillim:
    (psalms of King David)

You can buy your own book of Tehillim at any Jewish bookstore, feldheim.com or artscroll.com

If you have Adobe Acrobat installed, you can download a small sampling here: Hebrew/English.

You can also read them online:
    English | Hebrew.

They are uniquely powerful and have a well-known metaphysical effect.

The most important element of Tehillim is knowing you are doing a very special and holy thing by reading them outloud.

  • The best:
  • Organize a group to say Tehillim (Psalms of Kind David) using "Tehillim M'chulak" (see picture) (The 150 psalms divided into 24 booklets of about 6 psalms each)
  • Next best:
  • Say any tehillim (see picture) in a group in Hebrew
  • Next best:
  • Say any tehillim by yourself in Hebrew
  • Next best:
  • Say any tehillim in a group in any language
  • Next best:
  • Say any tehillim by yourself in any language

    Do "Gemilut Chasadim":
    (Acts of interpersonal kindness)
When you give of yourself, you more closely resemble God, Who is the ultimate giver.
  • The best:
  • Specifically, Binyamin tells us in these times this refers primarily to strengthening and encouraging other people in Emunah and Bitachon.

"Emunah" is the unshakable certainty that God controls every detail of this world and it's events -- and in the end the outcome will be for the good, while "Bitachon" is the ability to live life with that confidence and make decisions based on it.

Why is the emphasis on helping other people? That's easy: To be a spreader of Emunah, Bitachon, positive attitudes and healing words, a person first increases his own constructive thoughts, words and actions. Then, he is more able to be a helper to his friends and family.

Everyone is looking for 'light' these days. The most comforting light is the one that emanates from a Jew with Emunah and Bitachon.

That's you. It's meant to be you. That's what being a "light to the nations" is all about. And fortifying your Jewish Future is the first step.

    During an Emergency

Say Tehillim: As we said above, Tehillim, psalms of King David, are by far one of the most powerful spiritual tools available to every Jew today.
Tehillim have been recited for thousands of years to bring about protection, healing and salvation. When "evil" is running loose, Tehillim are the best weapon. You can say the ones that are online here (best to download them and print them) or buy yourself a book with the Hebrew translated into English so you can understand how meaningful these psalms really are. You can buy your own copy at feldheim.com or artscroll.com
